On Saturday, August 8, 2009, we'll be holding the 2009 San Diego TYD Tournament.

This is a saltwater fly-fishing, "limited take" event (more on that later). It will be based out of Dana Landing in Mission Bay, and will last just ONE DAY. Fishing starts at 6:00 AM, weigh-in is at 4:00 PM.

TYD stands for "Tuna - Yellowtail - Dorado", which are the only species eligible for score.

As you might expect, this is intended to be an offshore fly-fishing tournament, rather than a coastal event like the June 3Bs contest. However, it should be noted that last summer people were taking yellowfin tuna less than 10 miles off Pacific Beach!

The TYD is organized a little differently than the 3Bs Tournament:

  • This is a "team" tournament - all persons fishing on the same boat constitute a team. The team's score is based on the AVERAGE WEIGHT OF FISH per team member. This is to allow smaller boats an equal opportunity to win, even if the boat only carries two or three people (heck, you can enter to fish by yourself, if you want).

The entry fee is $150.00 for 1-2 team members, then $50.00 for each additional team member.

  • This is not a "Catch-and-Release" event - Because dorado, yellowtail and tuna can be much more difficult to handle than the 3Bs, you will need to bring your fish in for score. However, as noted above, this is a "limited take" event - you can only keep three fish per team member, and there is no culling.

  • Like the 3Bs tournament, you get double points for "Slams" - 1 Tuna, 1 Yellowtail, and 1 Dorado, but there is no handicap for using a guide

Like the 3Bs tournament, we've got some deals going on to make it easier for you to participate:

  • Don't have a boat? Paradigm Shift Charters is offering a 25% discount if you book them for the tournament. See our Tournament Deals page to learn more.

  • Never been in a tournament before? Worried about competition? No problem! We will be holding "Tackle, Techniques & Strategies" seminars before the tournament in Los Angeles, Orange County, North County San Diego, and Point Loma. We'll go over the equipment and different strategies to help you come out on top! Anyone can attend, so feel free to drop by and listen. If you like what you hear, sign up!.

  • Not sure where to stay? We have rooms set aside for registered contestants at the The Dana on Mission Bay. The Dana is right next to the Dana Landing launch ramp, so you can leave your boat in the ramp parking lot, and just walk over in the morning. It's also the location for our pre-tournament contestants' meeting. See the Tournament Deals page for more info.(PLEASE NOTE: This is peak season for The Dana, so even though we have a discount price, there is a 2-night minimum stay in order to take advantage of this deal).
This is the first of its kind tournament for Southern California, and will be a very low-key, FOR FUN, event that I think you'll enjoy. We've got some great prizes, too! So come out, meet some new friends, learn a lot, and have a good time! I hope to see you out there!
