Capt. Bryan Webb (Pacific Coast Flyfishing) called in this report:
Fishing at Catalina has just been “ridiculous” the last few days. Lots of the 3Bs with some jumbo mackerel mixed in, and lots of YELLOWTAIL seen, but not hooked (yet). The bonito and barracuda have been as large as 6lbs. Best flies have been Clousers and Deceivers in Black/white and Olive/white. Bryan has been using a big bigger flies (6”) to try to discourage the mackerel.
The YT are in the 15 -25lb range, and are puddling in massive schools between Long Point and Goat Harbor. Capt. Webb thinks they may be spawning, as the fish are rolling around and following the flies, but not taking them.
Water temps have been in the high 60s, and the water has been clear and blue in these areas. Water was greenish and did not look as good from Italian Gardens down to Avalon. On the ride over, the seas have been 2-3’ swell, and reasonably calm in the morning, but breezy in the afternoon.
Closer to the mainland, the Horseshoe Kelp has been producing a lot of barracuda and sand bass again, while Palos Verdes around Portguese Bend has been producing white seabass to 40lbs. on conventional tackle.
SUMMER HAS BEGUN!
