New Two Meter Radio install:

Also got new canvas up there while I was at it.  Now I just need to figure out how to program in our DAC Club channels.

Radar on the left was formerly in the position of the two radios.  Not pictured on the far left is a Furuno GP7000 Sounder/Plotter.  When my old Sitex GPS Plotter gave it up, I went for the combo unit (never thought I’d do this).  The extra space allowed me to install the two meter radio.  One reason I had joined DAC was to build my on the water network with experienced anglers.  The DAC only talks on the two meter.  I’ve been a member for almost 10 years now and never really been able to talk to fellow members on the water.  Definitely not during the marlin season.  Now I just need to figure out how to program it.

This took waaay too long.  Threading the power line down the leg of the t-top already filled with many cables was a biatch.  I had to split the positive from the negative in the cord and do one at a time with a fish tape.  Working under the console is no fun as my shoulders barely fit.  My hands and arms are all cut up.  I lost the entire morning and I was supposed to be up at Big Bear taping drywall.

Anyhow, she’ll be ready for next weekend.  Not sure that I will be ready.  Just get me to the show with a tall cup a joe and I will go.

I finally got the two meter cloned to the DAC Channels and got to try it today.  This radio puts the vhf to shame.  It just booms long distance with clarity.  I pulled a diode which then allows the transmission frequency to bump up into the 149 mhz range.  Of course, I can only talk to fellow DAC members who have the programmed channels, but that’s the intent with these radios.

Jon, I was talking to DAC members making bait outside Dana today and I was at Italian Gardens!

Fishing sucked.  Water was 62 to 64 and green.  A dozen calicos to 14”, most on the deep candy down near the bottom.  Only one brief show of bones and that was West of the slides.

I’m dreading that I committed to fish the BAC Masters this coming Friday/Saturday.  Fishing aboard a 31 Cabo and plan to be fishing Mexican waters.
