We headed out of Huntington Harbor this morning to see if we could scratch a few barracuda that have been in the cattle counts lately. We made a quick stop at the southern section of the wall before heading out and scored a handful of short calicos before turning south towards the flats. The temp on the wall held at a sold 66.5 and the red tide has completely cleared except for a small patch on the southern corner.
After about an hour of searching we decided to fish with the fleet which was sitting in between the Balboa and Newport piers. We picked our spot and were immediately into some log barracuda. The bite lasted for about 10 minutes before the schools headed north with the whole fleet in tow trying to get ahead of them. This pattern kept up for a few miles before the fleet split up. We ended up with about 12 ‘cuda to 8lbs.
We ended the day back on the wall and managed another handful of bass with some nice-sized checkers in the mix. We pulled up and were in by 3:30.
The red tide seems to be breaking up nicely. There were some large patches outside of Huntington Harbor, and just off of Alamitos Bay. Other than that, we found clean water all the way down towards Newport. The temp on the wall was 66.5 and 63.7 on the flats.
