Really interested in this. For now I’m boatless, just fishing from the shore. But when I do go out I prefer to stay inshore and fish halibut. Tuna’s fun, but the bang-for-buck award goes to inshore halibut fishing and I’d like to try it with flies. Anyone been doing that?

I do well inside Camp Pendleton and Oceanside Harbor from my kayak.  I am usually fishing in less than 8 feet of water using a floating line-long leader and clouser.  I get a good mix of spotted bay bass and some “damn near” legal halibut.  I’ll be buying a new setup soon and will be expanding my line options so I can target deeper waters for them.

I am relatively new to fly-fishing.  I am liking it alot.

Wish I could help, but I’ve only caught the occasional dink on a fly while fishing for spotties…

You might check out some of the surf-fishing sites, I know there are more than a couple of people who have caught pretty decent ‘butts on a fly rod in the surf, and should be able to offer some advice.

My friend Floyd Sparks has caught a number of shorts recently on the backside of Catalina, using a prototype squid version of his Tuna Kahuna fly.
