I’m thinking of storing my boat in San Diego this spring through summer. I want to reduce the trailering. I need a spot that is secure, has 24 hour access and a wash down. Any ideas?

Randy I keep my trailer at Campland on the Bay on the north end of Mission Bay. They have 24 hour access and probably have a wash down and also their own ramp. Its actually not that expensive considering. It is secure—you need a sticker to get past the front gate guard and a gate code to get into the storage yard my trailer is in. Mostly people store boats and RVs. They are one of the few places around here that can handle my trailer at 30 feet. Plus its pretty much a straight shot down Ingraham St. to get to Dana Landing if you want to launch there. Worth a check… www.campland.com

Thanks, Scott they have been first on my list so far. Good to see that you are satisfied with the outfit.

I kept my boat there this summer and I thought it was a bit of a cluster.  The storage part was fine but the launching, retrieving and wash down were problematic.  First of all that place is a total zoo during the summer, more so on weekends.  The storage is on the other side of the property from the launch and there is no truck/trailer parking at the launch.  So you have to launch your boat, tie it off, go drop off your trailer, detach the trailer (because the storage spots aren’t deep enough for truck and trailer) and find a parking spot for your truck.  They do have “designated” truck/trailer parking by the rec center, but they don’t enforce it so it is always filled with cars.  You repeat the process to retrieve you boat.  There are a ton of boats that come out of there in the summer and the wash down seems to be always backed up, and my experience was that most guys had no problem spending 30+ minutes washing down (more like detailing) their boats with 3 or 4 boats waiting.  There is one designated wash down area and another hose bib right by the launch.  Remember as well, your at the back bay and it does take a little while longer to get out.

I actually found it easier to pick up my boat and go launch at Santa Clara Point and wait to return the boat until I thought the wash down was clear. I had the luxury though of waiting things out because my family bay house is just down from Santa Clara.

In the spirit of full disclosure it was my first summer with a boat, so I was a little reluctant to run the Campland gauntlet both on the water and land.  As an experienced boater you may be more patient and comfortable doing so.  FYI, an accident this past summer did take the life of one boater partially as a result of congestion at the dock.

If you are just going to primarily store it, I would say go for it.  It seemed secure and the price was reasonable, particularly that close to the water. I just became too frustrated with the launch/retrieve/wash process.

Waturner3, Thanks for the info. That is the situation I am trying to avoid. Nothing worse than after a long day waiting in line to do the washdown. I’ll look around at other options.
