New Two Meter Radio install:

Also got new canvas up there while I was at it. Now I just need to figure out how to program in our DAC Club channels.

Radar on the left was formerly in the position of the two radios. Not pictured on the far left is a Furuno GP7000 Sounder/Plotter. When my old Sitex GPS Plotter gave it up, I went for the combo unit (never thought I’d do this). The extra space allowed me to install the two meter radio. One reason I had joined DAC was to build my on the water network with experienced anglers. The DAC only talks on the two meter. I’ve been a member for almost 10 years now and never really been able to talk to fellow members on the water. Definitely not during the marlin season. Now I just need to figure out how to program it.

This took waaay too long. Threading the power line down the leg of the t-top already filled with many cables was a biatch. I had to split the positive from the negative in the cord and do one at a time with a fish tape. Working under the console is no fun as my shoulders barely fit. My hands and arms are all cut up. I lost the entire morning and I was supposed to be up at Big Bear taping drywall.

Anyhow, she’ll be ready for next weekend. Not sure that I will be ready. Just get me to the show with a tall cup a joe and I will go.

Just thought I’d let you guys know that my original site, Ocean Skiff Journal, is back!

I was not updating it for a while, as I was converting it to use the same platform that BTB uses. It turned out to be a major effort, because of the volume of content on OSJ, and the very different internal site structure. But everything is there, plus a little more.

I’ve kicked things off with a profile of Jones Brothers Marine, which is an east coast builder of some very nice CC hulls. Capt. Scott (Paradigm Shift Charters) runs their 26’ Light Tackle Series.

OSJ differs from BTB in that it is much more focused on small boats and general offshore fishing techniques that could apply anywhere, versus SoCal fly-fishing related content. There will be some crossover articles, but by and large, they will be unique.

Your user ID from this site is also good on the other site, so you won’t have to re-register over there.

Thanks in advance for visiting both sites!

Just a thought…

Like many things, it might be worthwhile to brush up before the season starts. Unlike some states, CA does not require a safe boating course, or require a license, but it’s always interesting to me to see what you’ve forgotten…

The CA Department of Boating and Waterways offers a home study guide, called “California Boating” that can be ordered at their website, http://www.dbw.ca.gov or do,wnloaded at this link: http://www.dbw.ca.gov/PDF/DBWBoatCourse.pdf Addit.ionally, there are some free internet courses, such as the BoatU.S. Online Boating Safety Course.

And don’t forget - you can get insurance discounts for completing a safe boating class, so it might be worth it, just for the insurance savings!

Have any of you heard of this new device that just came on the market? It’s a tracking device that is linked to email and cell phones so your loved ones can always be aware of where you are. Check it out at Findmespot.com. This seems to be a great idea for the offshore small boat fisherman or even the adventurous kayaker or wayward backcountry fisherman. It has a 911 function, is waterproof and actually limks to Google Earth so your exact location can be tracked. Ok, any of you who have soon to be teenage children, think of the possibilities. You could have them take the device with them and you can see exactly where they are every 10 minutes. This will be teir nightmare. I can already see a cottage industry of kids taking the device to church for others for a price while they sneak away for privacy. At 150 bucks or so the price point is less than 20% of a sat phone or efirb and the 99 dollar yearly fee to send messages is far below the lowest sat phone rates. If you don’t need to chatter, but just want to assure others that you are ok, this seems to be a good choice. I always have to tell my family that the seas dictate when I get back so don’t start worrying right away when I’m later than my usual time. Also I have had to leave some good bites just to get back so I wouldn’t unduely worry the family. This device seems to take care of most of these issues. The kicker is that it has almost a world wide coverage. So if I got a wild hair and ran off to Costa Rica to chase tarpon, my cross country dirt road adventure could be followed in great detail. Amazing. What’s next?

I’m thinking of pickingup some image stabilizing binos this winter. I would use them for finding kelp offshore. If I could increase my success by 25% or more that would mean that many more shots. I am always amazed and how intently I can be watching but still have my mind wander and almost run over a patty. I’m thinking the lower powred models might actually be better because they give a greater field of vision and I’m not interested in detail at great distances. I found some Nikons for 700 dollars. Any thoughts/
