The FH Long Beach Show was an interesting time for me…my first seminar attracted 22 people! Ok, so the counts for the other seminars were 1, 3 and 0…but the total was encouraging!

Actually, the seminars with 1 and 0 were the last seminar on Saturday (7:00p), and the last seminar on the last day of the show (5:00p Sunday), so no surprises there…and on Sunday there were some problems with the signs, so several people couldn’t find me…so I guess overall, things went pretty well.

Anyway, I’m scheduled for one seminar/day at the Del Mar show, this one is a combined coastal and offshore seminar.

“Fly-fishing Beyond The Breakwater” will be in the Fin-Nor Theater at the following times:

Thursday 3/24 6:00pm
Friday 3/25 6:00pm
Saturday 3/26 1:30p
Sunday 3/27 1:30p

For these seminars, I will be have a drawing for a Rio Outbound Short fast-sinking line (retail value of $70.00!). Make sure you attend, your odds are good!

As before, these seminars are oriented towards conventional gear guys looking to switch over to fly gear, but everyone’s welcome!

My contact at the FH shows said he was favorably impressed with the amount of fly activity at the casting ponds in Long Beach. Let’s do even better at Del Mar! And remember, the more you boost attendance at the fly fishing venues, the more likely it is that FH will have more and better fly-fishing stuff next year.

Hope to see you there!

Beyond The Breakwater will be doing two seminars (“Nearshore and Offshore Opportunities”) at the Pasadena FF Show, Feb 19-20 (http://www.flyfishingshow.com/Pasadena.html).

We are scheduled for 11:00a on Saturday, and 10:00a on Sunday, both in Destination Theater Room B. Plus I’ll be hanging out at the show, most likely in the FFF booth.

This is a high-level intro overview of what you can expect when fishing the kelp beds and offshore: what you’ll catch, equipment needs, resources like guides, etc., and is meant for the fly-fisherman who doesn’t know exactly where to start.

I know there are a lot of other great seminars going on, but to tempt you into attending this one, I am having the following giveaways:

* Each session will have a drawing for a Scientific Anglers Streamer Express fly line.

* The first 3 people that sign the attendance list will receive their choice of a 30’ section of Scientific Anglers T10+, T12+, T14+, OR T18+, for the “roll your own” shooting head fan.

Hope to see you there!

Hey Everyone,

As many of you know, the offshore season in SoCal has been pretty dismal so far.

Unseasonably cold weather and water temps are probably the culprits, but with warming weather down here in San Diego, I am keeping my fingers crossed that we’ll have at least a decent September - October tuna / yellowtail bite.

Consequently…I am rescheduling the TYD tournament to Sept. 11, same location (Dana Landing, Mission Bay).

There are signs the fishing might start to break open this week (yesterday a boat reported taking some bluefin and yellowfin tuna about 90 miles south of San Diego), but rather than take a chance on August 28th, I am opting to delay a couple more weeks to Sept. 11.

My apologies in advance if this has messed up your plans to attend. The website, rules, dowload forms & on-line registration have all been updated to reflect the new date:

http://www.btbff.com/index.php/btbff/Tournament3/881

Hope to see you there. Feel free to email or call (760) 419-2124 if you have any questions…

Floyd Spark and I are putting on a FREE seminar on “Offshore Fly-fishing for Private Boaters” at Bluewater Tackle in Solana Beach on July 31. It’s basically meant for experienced offshore private boat fishermen who are interested in fly-fishing for tuna, yellowtail & dorado, but need a little help getting started.

We’ve got a morning session from 10:00 – noon covering basic fly-fishing. This includes a 1.5 hour casting lesson by Capt. John Hendrickson from the San Diego Fly Shop, and we’ve got plenty of demo saltwater fly rods provided by Temple Fork Outfitters, so students don’t have to bring their own gear.

In the afternoon session from 1:00 – 3:00p, we’ll have a little classroom time, but the bulk of the afternoon will be a round table/whiteboard talk lead by Floyd Sparks going over equipment rigging and tactics for typical offshore situations (fly-fishing after a jig strike, fly-fishing kelp paddies, porpoise and birds, etc.).

See complete info at: http://www.btbff.com/index.php/btbff/Event1/894
