FishHead iPhone App Combines Key Fishing Data

Dec. 3, 2009 - Nervous Water Apps announced the launch of FishHead, an exciting tool that rolls up online access to several types of key fishing data into one easy-to-use application for the iPhone/iPod.
Click HERE to read the full press release.
FishHead is the ultimate on the water and planning fishing application.
Track Weather, Stream Flows, Tides and Lunar tables all from the palm of your hand. FishHead organizes the information by location so that you see all of the pertinent fishing data to make on the water decisions. Track the flows of your favorite stream. Plan your trip around the best tides and look at the latest weather forecasts. It’s also equally effective at your home or at work. This app is designed with both fresh water and saltwater United States anglers in mind.
The App has an advanced search engine which allows you to track your current location with the GPS chip in the iPhone or iPod touch; it will tell you the closest streams or tide stations. Once your tide or river station has been selected it will align that information with the nearest weather station. In your favorites view you can now view weather, tide or river flows and the lunar calendar. If a weather station is down or providing inaccurate data it will automatically find the nearest station that is providing accurate data. You can also search by current location, station name, city or zip code.
The favorites view gives you a snap shot of all of the pertinent weather, tide/river, and lunar information all displayed on one view. Each of the different categories can be viewed in greater detail by clicking the detail view which will now give you tide and river graphs and forecasts for weather and future and past tides events. Turn the phone for a horizontal view and the graph appears showing either the tide chart or river chart. You can hold up to 20 of your favorite tide stations and 20 of your favorite river locations. Like many other iPhone apps you can swipe from one favorite to the next.
While there are many other Apps that have weather, tides, and river flows, only FishHead compiles ALL of the relevant fishing information and organizes it for quick and easy detailed info.
Fish Head is available on the iTunes Apps store at the introductory rate of $6.99.

Abel Unveils New Reel Sizes, Artistic Fish Colors for 2010

Abel Reels announced that three new sizes of fly reels, new fish graphics by American wildlife artists, a larger knife, and a “bullet proof” money clip are among the Abel products on tap for 2010.

Three new sizes of fly reels, new fish graphics by American wildlife artists, a larger knife, and a “bullet proof” money clip are among the Abel products on tap for 2010.
Abel will introduce the new precision machined fly-fishing and outdoor enthusiast tools at the Fly Fishing Retailer World Trade Expo, in Denver, Sept. 10-12.
The new Super Series 3N and 4N reels were created based on recommendations from customers, dealers and the pro staff. They feature a narrower profile, reduced weight and increased arbor size for high speed line pick-up. Machined from 6061-T651 cold finished aircraft quality aluminum, both the Super 3N and 4N will be available in Large Arbor and Standard Arbor versions.
The 3N Large Arbor version was designed for 3- and 4-weight lines; the Standard Arbor configuration is for 5- and 6-weights.
The 4N Large Arbor is for 4- and 5-weights, while the Standard Arbor model is for 6- and 7-weight flylines.
Abel’s Large Arbor Super 9/10 Quick Change (QC) was designed for dorado (dolphinfish or mahi-mahi), striped bass, false albacore, Pacific yellowtail, tarpon, Chinook salmon and other saltwater big game. Weighing 9.7 ounces, it will hold 225 yards of 20-pound backing with a 9-weight line; 175 yards with a 10-weight. The large arbor configuration provides a distinct advantage in rapid line pick-up.
With the addition of the Super 3N, 4N, and 9-10 Super QC, Abel now produces 22 reel models in their Super Series, Super Series Quick Change, Anti/Reverse, Trout (TR) and Abel Creek (AC) series.
Florida wildlife artist Tim Borski has joined creative forces with the California tackle manufacturer to produce a collectors’ edition 7/8 Super Quick Change reel in a bonefish design to benefit the non-profit Bonefish & Tarpon Trust. Abel will produce 100 signed and numbered reels; this is the third release in the Borski Series. The bonefish reel by Borski is priced at $2,000.
Abstract cutthroat and brook trout reels with artwork by Montana-based fish and wildlife artist Derek DeYoung will be available in a limited edition run during 2010 on any size or model Abel reel for an additional $350. A graduate of the Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, Mich., DeYoung’s fly-fishing abstract paintings are sold in galleries throughout the world.
Standard AbelBlade knives have been expanded some 25% to create a larger version for use by campers, hikers, rock and mountain climbers and others who need a slightly larger cutting tool. With a 3.5-inch blade and weighing 3.4-ounces, the proportionally balanced large version knife is the answer for those who want an Abel knife just a little bigger than the original design.
Whether carrying a few dollars or a wad of $20s, the new Abel Money Clip will keep bills securely folded and tight as a drum. Made in conjunction with Geraghty Products, Golden Valley, Minn., and anodized by Abel in both solid colors and fish graphic patterns, the clip holds cash and credit cards securely, with less bulk than any other money clip or wallet on the market. Made with a heat-treated stainless steel spring, Neoprene® grip pads to ensure money stays in place, and a Delrin® roller ball for the slide bars, clips are produced from bar stock on CNC computer-controlled mills.

Gary Loomis Joins Temple Fork Outfitters
July 10, 2009 - Temple Fork Outfitters announced that noted rod designer Gary Loomis has joined their staff. Click HERE to read the press release.
Press Release
July 10, 2009
Temple Fork Outfitters teams up with fishing legend Gary Loomis
Let’s say we have a small but very successful fly rod company with almost 15 years of excellent growth in sales and customer service … with a dedicated factory, engineering and proprietary designs. Add to that the experienced guidance from the likes of Lefty Kreh, Bob Clouser, Ed Jaworowski, Nick Curcione, Jim Teeny, Gary and Wanda Taylor and literally dozens of Advisory Staff members from around the world who have helped us make the right tool for the right job. This mix of engineering and design has proven to be a winner in the highly competitive and discerning fly fishing market.
Now, let’s say we want to expand our focus into the conventional spinning and casting rod markets by applying our excess capacity, distribution and customer service to this sector with the same Affordable – High Performance goals that have helped grow participation in fly fishing.
What single person has both the design experience, the engineering skills and can give us the guidance we need to be successful? Who has experience from use, who shares our passion for the sport of fishing and most importantly the devotion to environment needed for healthy fish populations?
We could only think of one such person and he needs little introduction … Gary Loomis.
“The master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his information and his recreation, his love and his religion.. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence at whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he's always doing both.” ~ James A. Michener
Since the evolution of carbon fiber rodmaking, Gary has distinguished himself as a Master. He has been immersed in leading edge technology and design that when married, created fishing tools that have satisfied the most demanding of anglers around the world. Beyond his obvious talents, Gary is fully committed to helping us grow participation in fishing. He believes that the Affordable – High Performance approach we have used so successfully in fly fishing combined with our commitment to customer service forms a great base for growth. He wants to advance performance of our rods and he certainly has the know-how to do so.
Gary probably said it best: "All I have ever wanted to do was build the best rods available for everyone to fish. Through TFO, I am able to deliver a true performance rod that once cost three times as much. Working with TFO allows me to put high-quality rods in the hands of potential anglers that otherwise would not have access to this kind of gear. It is these new anglers that through their enjoyment of the sport, will help us protect our threatened fisheries."
We’ve started production of 28 one and two piece rods in both spinning and casting configurations in 6’, 6 ½’ and 7’ lengths. They will feature single foot guides with gold SIC inserts, skeletonized lower grips and fast/progressive actions. Retail pricing will be $99.95 and availability is expected in early September. Gary’s analysis of the entire process – from blank performance to finish out – has been amazing to see and we expect these rods will be even more amazing to fish.
Please join me in welcoming Gary to our Temple Fork Outfitters family.

TFO Announce Baby Mini Magnum Rod
July 7, 2009 - Temple Fork Outfitters announced the launch of new lighter line-weight versions of their Mini Magnum rod, Mini-Magnum kits, and Bug Launcher kids rods. Click HERE to read the press release.

Press Release:
July 7, 2009
TFOs New Mini Magnum/Mini-Mag Kits and Bug Launcher Fly rods
Who inspired you to pick up a fly rod? Chances are it was a parent, your “favorite” uncle or a close friend that helped you throw your first tailing loop with great pride. You probably landed your first fish on a hand me down rod with a missing guide and a doctored tip. If it’s time for you to pass your knowledge onto others, Temple Fork Outfitters has the perfect rod to hand down; introducing the Bug Launcher series of fly rods.
Bug Launchers include smaller diameter compressed cork grips and the yellow Bug Launcher logo stands out against a candy apple red blank. Speaking of blanks, this series is made from general graphite so there’s less risk when that passing dragonfly happens to take a swipe. Two models, a 7’ 4/5 weight and an 8’ 5/6 weight, both are 2 piece and have a suggested retail of $79.95
The Mini Magnum now has a little brother as TFO adds a 6/8 weight (200-300 grains) to the mix. Like its big brother, the Mini Mag 6/8 is not to exceed 8’, keeping it “legal” for many tournament fishing circuits. Equally at home in both fresh and salt water, Mini Mags are constructed with a hybrid combination of S-Glass and high-modulus carbon fiber for exceptional lifting power and casting ability. So go ahead and throw your favorite pattern into the junk, once eaten there’s enough butt strength to rip bronzebacks out of the rock quarry or wrestle linesiders away from the dock pilings.
Mini Magnum rods are not just powerful fishing tools; the polished blue marble finish makes these 3 piece rods a stunning piece of equipment topped with oversized stripping and snake guides. The up-locking reel seat features a cushioned channel that is set in a flor grade full wells cork grip with a large comfortable fighting butt. Suggested retail is $199.95.
Mini Mag kits (available mid-July) will include a TFO Prism CLA reel (7/8 or 9/11) rigged with a fly line (8 or 10 wt. line), leader and backing all packed neatly in a rod and reel carrying case. Suggested retail is $299.95.
All TFO rods feature a lifetime unconditional warranty. Simply return the damaged rod with $25 for shipping and handling, and we will repair or replace your rod. For additional information contact your local dealer or visit www.templeforkflyrods.com .

At Long Last!:
IGFA Adds Pacific Barracuda, Bluefin Tuna to Eligible WR Species

The IGFA has added two fish to their list of eligible WR species: the Pacific Barracuda, and the Pacific Bluefin Tuna.
For most of us "old timers" in Southern California, the elevation of the Pacific Barracuda to gamefish status is long overdue. The Pacific Barracuda is a great fighter and strikes flies readily. It's one of the most popular coastal species in Southern California.
We've personally caught fish over 10lb on the long rod, and while those stovepipes have been lacking the last couple of seasons, there's no reason we won't see them again. They are a great opportunity for YOU to bag a world record!
The Pacific Bluefin Tuna is another interesting possibility. For many years, the assumption was that all Bluefin Tuna, even the onces we catch out here in California, were sub-species of the Atlantic Bluefin Tuna. Now, as a result of DNA testing, it has been determined that the Pacific Bluefin Tuna are, in fact, a separate species, and as such, eligible for separate consideration in the world records.
This is another area where BTB fly-fishermen have a decent shot at a world record, as the Bluefin Tuna we see in SoCal are a good size for handling on fly gear. On the other hand, they are notoriously skittish at times, so it might be a while before someone "cracks the code" on catching them in our neighborhood.
Go get'em!

Update:
2009 Season Getting Closer
April 6, 2009 - It looks like the 2009 season is getting close. Fishermen at La Jolla have been taking some nice yellowtail and white seabass on bait, and there has been some good fly-fishing for sub-legal barracuda as well.
There have been reports of scattered yellowtail and bonito at the Rockpile (the yellowtail have all been caught on yo-yoed metal jigs), and the Coronados have seen some fish taken on slow-trolled sardines.
Water temps have been in around 60-61 degrees, but with a storm front scheduled for Wednesday, and another front arriving over the weekend, fishing may shut down until the weather stabilizes. See our BTBFF Fishing Report Forum for more info.

Sportfishing Conservancy Announces “No Wear” Campaign

March 6, 2009 - The Sportfishing Conservancy announced a campaign to have the California Fish and Game Commission rescind the requirement for fishermen to wear their fishing licenses. You can participate by signing an on-line petition. Click HERE to read more...
From reader Steve Mras (Salsipuedes):

Have you ever left your fishing license at home and discovered it when you’re already at the dock? Or had it on a hat that blew off? The Fish and Game regulation that requires all anglers to “display” their fishing license when fishing is just a nuisance. Wardens admit that this regulation does not help in enforcement. Too many people either forge or “borrow” a license so the wardens have to personally check each one.
The Sportfishing Conservancy is doing something about this regulation. We’ve asked the Fish and Game Commission to change it when they approve new sportfishing regulations this summer (this is done every three years). We need fishermen to sign on to www.sportcon.org and enter their information so that we can show widespread angler support. It just takes a minute but if you’re like me, it will save time looking for which tackle box (or jacket) I left my license.
Of course, when this is changed Fido will be the only one required to wear a license. For more information call April Wakeman at (714) 686-6548 or email april@sportcon.org

Fishermen's Spot Forms Fly Fishers Anonymous
January 6, 2009 - Ken Lindsay at The Fishermen's Spot called to announce the formation of "Fly Fishers Anonymous", an informal group of avid anglers dedicated to futhering their fly fishing addiction.
This group will get together on Thursday evenings at Fishermen's Spot from 6 to 8 PM to share ideas, fly tying, casting and general BS.
They'll have tables set up for fly tying and rigging, and as the days grow longer they will get outside for some casting as well.
This is a chance to absorb the skills that make us all better fly fishers from experienced local anglers in a very informal, no cost setting.
Beginning Thursday, January 15th, 2009 they will be open until 8 PM every Thursday until further notice. This will also help those who can't make it to the store during their regular business hours. Novice and experienced anglers alike will grow from this creative exchange of ideas and techniques. Stop by and feed your Addiction.

Bob Clouser Joins TFO Staff
July 18, 2008 - Temple Fork Outfitters President Rick Pope announced today that Bob Clouser, originator of the famous "Clouser Deep Minnow" has joined the advisory staff of TFO.
"Since introducing the famed Clouser Deep Minnow in 1984, Bob has contributed much to fly fishing. He has been involved in everything from rod design to tying vises and materials refinements, from books and videos to hosting fly fishing schools and clinics." said Pope.
"If you have been fortunate enough to spend some time with him, you’ll agree that in addition to his status as an ambassador for fly fishing, he is one of the very finest individuals in the sport. In summary, Bob’s life experiences perfectly fit our Mission Statement: to increase participation in and awareness of fly fishing by offering the best possible combination of price and performance in rods and related products."
As a member of the TFO Advisory Staff, Clouser will be involved in the design of rods and related products, assist in developing casting schools and educational programs, and participate in general business planning for TFO.

Summer Sand Bass Bite!
Summer Sand Bass Bite!
July 20, 2008 - The summer sand bass spawn is in full swing, and there are reports of wide-open fishing for grumps on the flats off the Tijuana Bull Ring. Nice-sized barracuda are also in the mix, and our guess would be that there are a few trophy White Seabass hanging around under the other fish. Coastal fishing further north also continues at a good clip, with The Long Beach Wall producing more calico bass, sand bass, barracuda, and bonito.
Unfortunately, offshore fishing continues to be hit-or-miss, with more and more signs of yellowtail and dorado on the paddies on the local banks, but nothing consistent. Tuna fishing within 60 miles of San Diego is also sketchy, however, there appears to be a good body of fish at the 90 mile mark south of San Diego.

2008 Season Struggles
June 26, 2008 - The 2008 offshore season continues to sputter, with small catches of albacore, yellowtail, bluefin tuna, and even a marlin or two being reported, but with no consistency. Weather and swell swings seem to be a major factor, as conditions ranging from flat calm to washing-machine seem to be occuring almost on alternating days.
One bright spot - Capt. Scott Leon, of Paradigm Shift Charters, reports that the albacore he has been picking up are stuffed with "micro-baits" - 2" or shorter fry. A perfect size for fly-fisherman to imitate.
Coastal fishing seems to be more consistent, with a steady pick of calico bass at the usual locations, mixed in with occasional flurries of both barracuda and bonito. See our Fishing Reports Forum for the latest info.

SPOT, Inc. Announces SPOT Shared Pages

May 8, 2008 - SPOT, Inc, makers of the popular SPOT Satellite Messenger℠, announced that a new service, SPOT shared pages, has entered beta testing. The SPOT shared pages feature allows SPOT users to create maps showing their position and progress that are available via the Web to others, whether or not the other people have access to a SPOT account. Click HERE for the full story.
SPOT Inc., makers of the award-winning SPOT Satellite Messenger℠, today launched the beta release of SPOT shared pages – a free, Web-based software application that enables users to share their GPS location waypoints and SPOT messages with others via an e-mail link displaying sophisticated mapping and real time tracking on Google Maps™.
As discussed in our article "Here Spot!", the SPOT Satellite Messenger sends the users’ GPS location and custom messages to family and friends or emergency responders over a satellite communications network. Users can designate up to ten e-mail or cell phone addresses to receive messages directly. Now with SPOT shared pages, users can create, manage and share their SPOT messages, with enhanced GPS waypoints, from around town or around the world for anyone online to track the SPOT user’s progress.
The shared pages service is a no-charge, optional feature that is available to any SPOT subscriber, so others can view their SPOT messages whether they have a SPOT account or not. The user creates his or her shared page, chooses what information is to be shown and e-mails a web link to friends and family. Shared pages can be password protected or made public.
SPOT subscribers control every aspect of their shared page including:
- Public and private settings
- Multiple shared pages
- One or multiple SPOT messengers to be shared
- Personalization/naming of shared pages
- Password protection
- What Information is shown
- Creation of new and overall maintenance of their shared pages
"With its introduction, SPOT gave people who spend their days outside of cell coverage the ability to send a message to a small, select group in real time." said Darren Bassel, Marketing Director for SPOT Inc. "Shared pages are an answer to the tremendous response we’ve seen from all of the adventure racers, hikers, bikers, hunters, boaters, and pilots who can now broadcast their waypoint history to anyone with a web connection. SPOT shared pages takes social networking into the real world since SPOT subscribes can update others over the web with a single button push from virtually anywhere."

Long Beach Casting Club Needs Your Help!
April 5, 2008 - On December 2, 2007, the historic Long Beach Casting Clubhouse suffered extensive fire damage. The cost to rebuild the clubhouse exceeds the insurance coverage by at least $50,000, so they are appealing to members and the public for help. Click HERE for the whole story...
We saw the following posted on several bulletin boards. We don't think anyone will mind us posting it as well...

Subject: LBCC Restorations
Greetings,
I really hate to be in this position, but Long Beach Casting Club needs your help. If you have visited our club in the past, you have seen our clubhouse and are aware of the historic photographs and other memorabilia that were inside. Our clubhouse burned on December 2 and suffered a great deal of damage. Although we had insurance, the cost of rebuilding and replacing the contents will be at least $50,000 more than our insurance coverage. We have a lot of fundraising to do.
We’ve asked all our members to donate both money and time. We are also going to have a raffle and auction, not just for our members but also for many others in the fishing community. Would you please consider making a donation to our rebuilding fund? Cash donations would allow us to restore the clubhouse most expeditiously, but we could also use items that can be raffled or auctioned: a book, DVD, flies or a fly plate, fishing trip, casting lesson, rod, reel, line or other equipment - anything that would appeal to fisher men and women?
Please send any donations to Carole Katz at 1801 Bridle Path, Santa Ana, CA 92705. You may contact her at (714) 731-6044 if you have any questions. For cash donations, please send to P.O. Box 90035, Long Beach, CA 90809. Long Beach Casting Club is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, so your donation should be tax deductible.
Thank you so much.
Sincerely,
Joe Libeu

Fishermen's Spot Charters Aboard the Sea Jay

This summer, The Fishermen's Spot will be chartering the Sea Jay for some exciting action at the Channel Islands. These are limited-load trips (6 anglers), and they have scheduled 3 dates. Click HERE for more details...

This summer we will be teaming up with Capt. John Fuqua on the Sea Jay for some exciting local saltwater action at the Channel Islands. If you have not tried saltwater fly fishing this is the ideal way to get started at a very reasonable price.
The Sea Jay fishes the fertile waters around Santa Cruz and Anacapa Islands for a wide variety of species. Calico Bass, Sand Bass, White Sea Bass, Bonita, Yellowtail, Barracuda, and Mackerel are all possible on a trip to the Islands. All of these species take a fly very well and are great scrappers. These trips are limited to 6 anglers to give everyone a chance to tangle with these offshore denizens. We have scheduled 3 dates for this year's charters and they are as follows:
Tuesday, July 22nd 2008
Tuesday August 19th 2008
Thursday September 4th 2008

Each group will be accompanied by an experienced staff member from the Spot who will be there to assist in the learning process and get you hooked up in the Bluewater. Total cost for the days fishing is $150 per person and this includes fuel charge and bait for chumming fish into fly rod range.

Renzetti Announces New Products
Renzetti Announces New Products

They also announced that they have become distributors for the Tuffleye product from Wet a Hook Technologies
Renzetti, makers of some of the best fly tying tools in the world, today announced the Traveller 2200 vise, the Special Edition Masters vise, and their distributorship of Tuffleye, a crystal-clear, acrylic replacement for epoxy.
The Next Generation Traveler

Traveller 2200 Vise
Often times it’s very difficult to improve on a classic. The old saying “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it” comes to mind. But every so often even a classic needs to be updated. Renzetti, the producer of the finest fly tying vises made today, made a few changes to one of their best selling vises of all times, proving that change can indeed be for the best.
The new Traveler 2200 series vises will eventually replace the Traveler and Traveler Cam series of vises, but ultimately is an entirely new vise unto itself. This new version retains all the features of the original Traveler, such as the bent rotary shaft, the black oxide coated jaws that hold hooks from size #28 to 4/0, and the bobbin cradle but it features an entirely new rotary head and shaft design and a longer stem. And while still created from the same aircraft grade aluminum as the original, this new model has a clear anodized finish to increase longevity and durability.
As the result of many requests, the length of the Traveler 2200 Series base stem is increased from 6 up to 7 inches. It may not seem like much, but it will certainly allow a tier greater freedom of movement around the vise. Those familiar with the Traveler series will immediately notice the difference in the appearance of the 2200, which features a remodeled rotary head and shaft, giving a more up-to-date look.
Standard features for the new series includes an aluminum bobbin cradle and your choice of a powder coated cast zinc pedestal base or a c-clamp base. As with previous models, the Traveler 2200 Series vise must be ordered specifically for right- or left-handed tiers. All of the Traveler accessories will work with this new vise, but bear in mind that the 2200 does not replace the Saltwater Traveler, which has jaws able to hold larger hooks. An updated Saltwater Traveler will be available in April of 2008. Similar to the previous Traveler, its jaws are not interchangeable with the Saltwater Traveler, however you will be able to order a new series Saltwater Traveler Bent Shaft and a set of Saltwater Traveler jaws to complete the conversion once its available.
For those simply wishing to update an existing Traveler, a few conversions are possible. Contact Renzetti directly to find out which components are compatible. The Traveler 2200 Series Base model retails for $184.95 and is proudly made in the USA.
Special Edition Masters Vise
Often when you see an already exceptional product upgraded it means it has just become less usable and more for collectors or display purposes. Plus, when you talk about top-end items, there usually isn’t much room for useful improvement. The Special Edition Master’s Vise by Renzetti undermines both of those ideas with a subtle but significant and attractive modification, creating a true heirloom-quality tool you’ll actually want to use.

Special Edition Masters Vise
Put simply, the only change to this very special version is that the aluminum body and arm are hard anodized in a stylish black finish. Hard anodization is usually reserved for fly reels and reel seats or any other application of aluminum that might come in contact with harsh conditions or be treated roughly in order to protect it better. While it might be perceived as overkill for a fly tying vise, especially one as overbuilt as the Masters, simply realize that many people have tied on their Masters Vise for decades now and that level of continuous use around solvents, glues and epoxies creates a harsh environment. A hard anodized finish will easily extend the lifespan of this vise by years, perhaps even decades, creating something you may well pass along to your kids, or even grandkids someday. The black color, together with the standard gold accents, keeps the vise from looking worn and creates a striking and elegant appearance. The finish will also make the vise much easier to clean at the end of the day and help to keep it clean for years to come.
The other addition to the Special Edition Masters is the inclusion of a matching black anodized Saltwater Deluxe base. All other features remain consistent with the original Masters, including jaws that hold hooks from size #28 up to 10/0, a built in material clip, the bobbin cradle and a true-rotary design.
The Special Edition Deluxe Master’s Vise retails for $729.95.
Renzetti Proudly Announces Tuffleye Distributorship
Anyone who has ever tied with epoxy knows the apprehension that comes with mixing up a batch you know mostly goes to waste. You often have to mix so much that you tie multiple flies hoping to coat several at once, but inevitably the mix hardens before you can finish. Besides, eventually it yellows and cracks anyway. You either need more hands or a better solution. We can’t help you with more hands, but Renzetti can now offer you a better solution – Tuffleye.

In an effort to continue bringing you the finest in fly tying tools and accessories, Renzetti proudly announces that it will begin distributing Tuffleye – an epoxy alternative created by Wet a Hook Technologies. “I have searched for years to find a material that outperforms epoxy in all facets, but unfortunately, every alternative would be deficient in some critical area,” says well-know tier and epoxy user Bob Popovics. “I have finally found a material I can honestly say surpasses epoxy.”
Tuffleye is a special light-cured acrylic that hardens in less than 20 seconds and ends up harder than epoxy and never yellows. Unlike epoxy, Tuffleye does not require mixing and comes in four consistencies, including gel, liquid, putty and elastic. The best part -- it won’t harden until you apply the proper wavelength of light, and you apply only what you need when you need it. The material can be colored and even weighted and remains totally insoluble in both fresh and saltwater forever.
Pricing for complete kits, including the special light and several tubes of the acrylic, begin at $88.95, but individual syringes of Tuffleye retail between $9.95 for a 10cc Tuffleye Finish to $19.95 for a 30cc syringe of Tuffleye Core. The light retails for $74.95.
For more information about Tuffleye or to order, simply log on to www.Renzetti.com.
For more information, write Renzetti at 8800 Grissom Parkway, Titusville, FL 32780; call 321-267-7705; or visit www.Renzetti.com to order or find your nearest dealer.

South Coast Fishing Slows
South Coast Fishing Slows
Nov. 1, 2007 - After a brief attempt at a recovery in October, offshore fishing in the Southland has pretty much died down. But coastal fishing can be excellent during periods of good current, with flurries of bonito, barracuda, calico and sand bass, and the occasional school of breezing yellowtail still being found.
While the average size of the winter bonito has dropped significantly in the last couple of years, there are still some good-size fish (6+ lbs) mixed in with the smaller fish. Homeguard (resident) yellowtail will also be caught, although these are typically deep fish (keep an eye on our Fishing Report Forum for the latest info).

In 1974, as a sophomore in college, I joined a fly fishing club in Montrose called Pacific 1. It was there that I met an outspoken Sociology professor from Loyola Marymount by the name of Nick Curcione. Over the years, I had the opportunity to witness his pioneering efforts at surf fly fishing, toss flies at sharks with him from his 20' Seacraft (quite the ride with its twin 70 HP outboards), and even fish King Harbor with him for bonito now and then.
Quick with a joke, and possessing a wry sense of humor, Nick is a riot to fish with. He's an excellent caster, has a keen eye for fish behavior, and knows what it takes to fight big fish to a standstill. He's wet a line all over the world, authored dozens of articles, and published several books, including "Tug-O-War: A Fly Fisher's Game", "Baja on the Fly", "The Orvis Guide to Saltwater Fly-Fishing", and "Doing It Stand-Up Style: A Guide to Long Range Fishing".
He's been a regular speaker on the fly-fishing show circuit for over 30 years, and his presentions on casting shooting heads and sinking lines are always well received. A true saltwater Renaissance Man, Nick feels just as comfortable tossing a pinhead anchovie on conventional gear as he does flinging feathers, which makes him a good match for what we want to do here at BTB.
Nick moved to Connecticut a number of years ago, and we lost touch, other than seeing each other occasionally at a fly show. But when I heard that he and wife Kathy would be westward bound soon, I took the opportunity to ask Nick if he would consider helping out with Beyond the Breakwater as a Contributing Editor. I consider it quite an honor that he accepted. I hope all of you will help me welcome Nick back to Southern California!

San Diego Area Fishing Bounces Back
San Diego Area Fishing Bounces Back
Sept. 24, 2007 - After the much-feared severe-cold-front-rain-storm failed to produce much rain (although we did have several waterspouts over the ocean), the fishing off San Diego has bounced back. Capt. Scott Leon (Paradigm Shift Charters) reported good fishing along the La Jolla kelp over the weekend, and board regular Randy Norris had some good luck in Mexican waters on the inner banks (see our Fishing Report Forum for more info).

Scattered schools of small (5 - 6lb) yellowfin tuna, an albacore over 30lbs from the Outer Banks, and decent numbers of marlin on the inner banks highlighted recent reports offshore.
Inshore, the Coronados continued to provide a consistent, if slow, pick at the usual mix of bonito, bass and the occasional yellowtail. La Jolla and Point Loma provided similar fishing.

Boats adventurous enough to take the pounding have found the fish scattered, but occasionally willing to bite. Increased numbers of football YFT have been seen as well. Water temps continue to hang in the high 60s, low 70s, and there is still a lot of bait around.

Coasting Fishing, Sharks, Tuna
Coasting Fishing, Sharks, Tuna
Mako shark fishing continues at a good clip in the San Diego area, with Capt. Conway Bowman (Bowman Bluewater Guides and Outfitters), reporting some of the best fishing they've had in a while. including sight-fishing in calm weather, fish in the 200lb class, and even a 12 ft hammerhead hooked. They've also baited marlin and swordfish on conventional gear, but have yet to hook one.
Offshore fishing for tuna has been good at the banks 50 - 70 miles offshore (Butterfly, 60 Mile, 390), with albacore and some yellowfin showing. The albacore have been large (over 35lbs), according to Capt. Scott Leon of Paradigm Shift Charters. The main problem has been the weather, with wind and swells keeping many of the smaller private boats in closer to shore.
Kelp paddy fishing for dorado and yellowtail continues to be slow. Lots of fish seen, but not many active biters. Reports of massive amounts of pinhead sauries leaves everyone thinking the fish are just stuffed. See our Fishing Reports Forum for more reports.

However! There have been reports of more yellowtail and dorado on paddies offshore, yellowtail have appeared in numbers at the Coronados, and Captain Scott Leon of Paradigm Shift Charters called in to report great fishing along the La Jolla Kelp.
A recent half-day trip resulted in lots of calico bass, bonito, and an 11lb. white seabass. See our Fishing Reports Forum for more info.

"La Jolla has been great for barracuda and the occasional yellowtail. The yellows still seem to be concentrated on the outside of the point around the East Corner. The white seabass fishing has been slow, however, local divers keep seeing good-sized schools of big fish deep in the kelp. The barracuda are spread out everywhere, slashing at bait on the surface, and the bass in the kelp have been picking up big-time because the water temps are coming up."
"This is a great time of year to explore up and down the coast looking for bird schools. The patchy red tide seems to be disappearing and hopefully it's gone for the season."

Many of you may better know Capt. Leon as the former Editor of Fly Fishing in Salt Waters magazine. Scott decided to move his guide business from south Florida to San Diego earlier this year. As a former Navy SEAL who trained at Naval Air Station Coronado, Scott has always had a soft spot for this area, and was anxious to return to SoCal to help promote salt water fly fishing.
He is running a Jones Brothers 26' center console with twin F150 Yamahas, the only one we know about on the West Coast. Jones Brothers boats are legendary on the East Coast, so we look forward to getting a ride and checking it out for our sister site "Ocean Skiff Journal".
