2010 TYD Tournament
After a false start, the 2010 Beyond The Breakwater TYD Tournament was held on September 11, 2010. Ten contestants in four teams fished the offshore waters surrounding San Diego and northern Baja California. Thanks to the coldest summer in 75 years, fishing was tough, but a few fish were hooked, and two outstanding fish were landed.

Looking Forward...
Destiny, Timing and Kharma...
This is the second year we've run the TYD. So far, we've have some bad luck with weather and climate issues, but as they say "the third time's a charm". If the current La Nina condition continues, it's likely that late August will still be too early. However, it does fit the best with most people's vacation schedules. So we'll see. Likeliest dates are (once again) the weekend before Labor Day, or sometime in the month of September. However, we will definitely not schedule for the same weekend as the Make-A-Wish Tuna Challenge!Form vs. Function...
We'll continue with this year's event format: one day, team tournament, 3-fish-per-team scoring format, major prizes awarded by drawing. We've been researching different ways to implement an all Catch & Release format, but haven't come up with anything good yet. The things we've looked at so far either are difficult to do on different size boats, or still pose significant problems in controlling a hot fish.
Ride, Baby, Ride!
Getting out beyond the breakwater still presents the biggest hurdle to getting involved in this sport. We're continuing to look at different way to get out there, and will keep you posted.
Some parting thoughts...
Counting our 3Bs events, this was our fifth tournament. Each time things get a bit easier operationally, but it's still a lot of work. Many thanks to my wife, Carolyn, and my sons Joel and Joseph, for helping out and continuing to support Dad's efforts. This year they were joined by Carolyn's sister, Cecelia Cabico, many thanks to her as well.
I also want to extend my thanks to everyone who participated in the event, and also to those who really wanted to attend, but couldn't make it due to scheduling problems. Your kind words and continued support makes all the work worthwhile. I hope that you continue to spread the word about fly-fishing BTB, and encourage people to try these events (and to visit Beyond The Breakwater, too!).
And of course, many thanks to our sponsors. Their continued support make our events a success. Please return the favor by checking out and buying their products, or visiting their stores for your next purchase.
See you next year in June at the 2011 3Bs Tournament!
