2010 TYD Tournament
After a false start, the 2010 Beyond The Breakwater TYD Tournament was held on September 11, 2010. Ten contestants in four teams fished the offshore waters surrounding San Diego and northern Baja California. Thanks to the coldest summer in 75 years, fishing was tough, but a few fish were hooked, and two outstanding fish were landed.

Catch Summary:
Total fish: 2 yellowfin tuna
Fish weight: 32.2, 21.8 lbs
Fish were present in good numbers, but suspended 30 - 200' down, and a bit skittish, perhaps due to boat traffic. Two other fish were reported hooked on fly gear, but lost.
Fishing was slow for most conventional gear guys as well. The TYD winning fish would have won the Small Boat Division of the Make-A-Wish Tuna Challenge, the 2nd place fish would have placed 11th. Our catch rates were comparable to the Make-A-Wish Tuna Challenge, even using fly gear.
Long Drive Award:

James Dwyer won the "Long Drive" award
This prize is awarded by random drawing from amongst all contestants who came 75 miles or more (one way) to fish the tournament (based on Google® Maps distance from their address of registration to Dana Landing Market).
The winner was: James Dwyer(129 miles, one way),who won a $50 gift certificate from The Fishermens' Spot. Note: Eight of the 10 entrants were eligible for this award. The longest distance travelled was 129 miles (James Dwyer, Los Angeles, and Mike Forrest, Burbank), the "shortest" distance was 85 miles (Larry Johnson, Costa Mesa).
The Captain Courageous Award:

Chuck Waterman (L)

Randy Norris (L)
This prize is not given out every year. It is awarded to a contestant or team that exhibited an unusually large amount of moxie or just flat-out craziness (in a good way, of course) during the competition.
For example, in this year's 3Bs tournament, the award went Mel, Sean and Scott Willis, who entered the competition in Mel's 16' driftboat. However, because they used an 8hp outboard, they had to compete in the Powerboat division.
For the 2010 TYD event, we had two winners:
Chuck Waterman, who had never taken his boat offshore, but entered anyway, making it as far as the 9 Mile Bank, and
Randy Norris, who fished the Sunday, Monday and Friday before the tournament, as well as tournament itself. Randy lives in Riverside (over 90 miles away), and was actually in Sacramento on business the Thursday before the tournament. He flew home, got the boat, and drove down to fish with Jon Nakano on Friday. Randy has always been a big supporter of these events, and shared his intel freely with all of the other contestants.
For their efforts, Chuck was awarded an ARC Dehooker, and Randy received a pair of Oakley Flak Jacket sunglasses.
