Sea Level Fly Fishing's Bluewater Extreme Fly Rods

Sea Level Fly Fishing Adventures

Sea Level Fly Fishing's Bluewater Extreme fly rods are a good fit for Beyond The Breakwater fly-fishing. Here's our review...
Introduction   Basic Specs   A Closer Look   Performance Notes   Other Notes & Conclusions

All of the rods in the Bluewater Extreme series measure 8’ long, and are 4-piece. (Editor's note: Our 10wt test rod was 7'11", but Ray advised that the production rods are now all 8').

Extremes are available in line weights ranging from 10wt through 16wt.

All models sport graphite reel seats, EVA foam grips and EVA foam foregrips.

The blanks are sanded and painted a metallic blue. Guide and ferrule wraps are black, with silver and blue thread trim.

These rods sport heavy-duty spigot ferrules, rather than the more common tip-over-butt design. Each section has ferrule alignment dots, as well as the line weight, written on the thread wraps around the ferrules.

All rods feature framed tip-top guides. On the 10wt and 12wt rods the guides on the lower sections are ceramic ring guides, while the tip section guides are oversized snakes. The 14wt and 16wt Extremes have ceramic ring guides the entire length of the rod.

The 14wt and 16wt rods also feature a unique swiveling aluminum gimbal butt. The swiveling gimbal has some advantages over a fixed gimbal, which we’ll discuss a bit later in this article. A snug-fitting heavy-duty butt cap is included to cover and protect the gimbal when not in use.

Each rod comes with a rod bag and triangular PVC rod case with a Cordura™ cover and zippered lid.
