The Incidental Record Holder

Steve Mras talks about the circumstances behind his 12 lb tippet Pacific Barracuda world record. Next time he'll read the fine print!

While the DAC allows anglers to submit just a sample of the tippet material used for a club record, the IGFA requires that the entire leader (including the fly) be submitted intact when applying for a world record.

"As my main goal was the DAC club records, I had been cutting and retying the same Mega Clouser Fly throughout the day, while saving the leader system used for each fish." Steve noted, "So due to my lack of familiarity with the IGFA rules, I disqualified all those fish for IGFA consideration, but was able to have them approved for new DAC Club Records."

But all was not lost. At the urging of Becky Wright, IGFA World Record Coordinator, Steve decided to go out and give it another shot.

"I went out the following day to target them again. The bite was slower on the chummed squid," Mras noted, "but I was able to get a 5.8 lb barracuda on 12 lb tippet."

Steve's fish was recently approved by the IGFA as a world record, Steve's first as an angler. It should be noted that prior to this, Steve had been involved in several world record catches, but always in the role of captain, not angler.

Steve's club records solidified his position in the "Top All-Around Boat" race. By the end of July, Salsipuedes had scored 60 points, 45 of which came from tournament competiton. Her closest competitor was Wild Bill with just 18. With just a couple of months to go in the 2009 season, it looks like Steve's goal to make Salispuedes the first DAC "Top All-Around Boat" will become reality.
