In the Spring of 2009, the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) added Pacific Barracuda to its list of fish eligible for world record consideration. The following summer, one of our readers, Steve Mras (who is new to saltwater fly-fishing), was able to take advantage of the vacant fly rod categories to add his name to the world records list.

Steve is a member of the Dana Angling Club, and actively competes in their tournament program. His world record came almost as a side-note to his pursuit of the club’s new “Top All-Around Boat” award, and the circumstances surrounding his catch make for an interesting story.

World records and fishing tournaments have always generated controversy in the fly-fishing community. Whether you like with them or not, they’ve been part of the angling scene for some time, and have helped drive many improvements in light-tackle and fly-fishing gear and techniques.

I asked Steve to share his story with BTB readers, and he was kind enough to provide the following information and photographs.
