2009 3Bs Tournament
The 2009 Beyond The Breakwater 3Bs Tournament was held on June 27, 2009. Twenty-five contestants from all over the Southland fished the waters around La Jolla, down to the Coronados. They found lots of fish, including calico bass, barracuda, and large Pacific greenback mackerel. Most of the fish caught were bass that were just short of the qualifying size for the tournament, but there were a few 15-19" fish caught, and the barracuda reported were all over 28". This article has the final results, and discusses the tackle and techniques used by the top finishers.

Notes for Next Time...
Next year's event will be held at roughly the same time next year - the weekend after Father's Day, or the weekend before the Fourth of July. Any earlier would be too soon, any later would conflict with too many other summertime events. I will actually be making the reservations shortly, and will have exact dates for you soon. But try to leave those weekends open!
We've got some improvements to make to the measuring boards for next year. Bill Calhoun has suggested some things that would make the it easier to control the fish while on the board, and has graciously offered to put together and test the prototype.
We'll have tables and chairs set up so that people can sit and eat inside the tournament area. While people seemed comfortable with the beach-style seating and the tables in the pedestrian walkway, it was clear this wasn't the best arrangement.
Some parting thoughts...
First, let me thank everyone again for participating. It was truly a historic event for SoCal fly-fishing - I believe it was the first-ever coastal saltwater fly-fishing only event, and certainly the first out here to use an all-CPR scoring system. Contestants caught a lot of fish, and while the size and variety could have been better, it was still a lot fun.
Organizing the tournament was a lot of work, but seeing everyone have a good time, and watching people get out "Beyond The Breakwater" and catch some fish on the long rod made it all worthwhile.
It was especially gratifying to have a couple of people tell me that the tournament had opened their eyes to a fishery that, quite literally, was just outside their door, but that they had never considered before.
Of course, our sponsors deserve a lot of credit for making this event a success. Their fantastic prizes and support were essential. Please show your support for them by checking out and buying their products, or visiting their stores.
And last but not least, many thanks to my wife and kids, and Teri Leon. I couldn't have done it without them!
See you next year!
