Galvan Fly Reels Fishermen's Spot

A New Version of the Shady Lady:
The Split Shot Squid

Text and photos by Nick Curcione

Here's a different way of tying extended-body flies that simplifies the tying process, and adds some additional action to Bob Popovics' Shady Lady squid pattern

Fishing Notes

Winter and early Spring are prime times to fish squid patterns. At these times of the year, smaller "Market Squid" are common in a number of areas, such as Catalina Island and La Jolla Canyon. They come into relatively shallow water to spawn at night and the very early morning hours ("grey light"), and are easy pickin's for yellowtail, calico bass, white seabass and rockfish.

While the fish might be hitting squid shallow at night, they quickly move deeper with the squid as the sun rises, so a Type VI, T-8, T-11 or T-14 sinking line is usually a more appropriate choice than a floating or slow-sinking line.

In the subdued light of early morning, a light leader is not required, and since you will be fishing near kelp and rocks, 16 - 20lb test tippets are not a bad choice.

Now tie some up, and GO FISHING!
