The Quiz  The Prizes   How To Enter & Rules   THE WINNERS!

THE WINNERS!

posted February 2, 2008

The Grand Prize Winner!

Matt Hale (atpjunkie), who not only correctly identified the rod as a Scott, the reel as a Feuer Brothers Taurus, and the fly as a Streaker, he also correctly identified the rod weight and general date of manufacture (11 wt., late 70s), and the size of the fly (3/0). Unfortunately for Matt, there are no prizes for extra credit answers.

Now the question is...is Matt a fly-fishing triva expert? Or did he notice that the answers were actually in the caption of one of the pictures in one of our previous articles: Why Isn't Salt Water Fly Fishing More Popular in SoCal?

The Second Prize Winner!

Stev Mras (salsipuedes), who correctly identified the fly.

The New Member Prize!

Ben Mitchell (benha), who correctly identified the fly and the reel.

I will be notifying the winners by e-mail later today. They'll need to send me their mailing address and phone number for UPS. Winners have 2 weeks to claim their prize, otherwise, we'll draw again!

Some Interesting Stats...

100% of the entries had the correct fly. In addition to the answers being in the afore-mentioned article, the file name for the quiz picture contained the fly name, so I hope everyone got it! I didn't want to make the quiz too hard - the intention was to have just about everyone get at least one answer right.

43% of the entries correctly identified the reel. Several people psyched out that since they could enter as many times as they wanted, all they had to do is submit 12 entries, one with each zodiac sign, and they were guaranteed get at least one entry with the right reel.

Only 5 entries correctly identified the rod. All but one of the entries that identified the rod also got the reel and the fly. But Matt was the first one to send in an entry.

The entries that had the wrong rod all guessed that the rod was a Winston, probably because of the reference to San Francisco. Obviously, most people don't know or remember that Harry Wilson started Scott rods in San Francisco around 1973.

The rod shown in the picture was purchased from The Fishermen's Spot in the late 70s, and I visited Harry and Larry Kenney in the San Francisco shop some time later. I remember towing my 16 aluminum skiff up to the Bay area to fish for stripers around the Airport, and driving around San Francisco looking for the Scott shop with the boat in tow. Lots of stress on the clutch, as I recall!

So that's it for now! Thanks to everyone for participating. I have another history quiz coming up shortly, so stay tuned!
