LEARN TO CAST - heck, that's one of the reasons you wanted to try fly-fishing, right? In Part I of this series, we identified some of the basic casts you need to learn. Now:
- GO OUT AND PRACTICE! Make sure you use a fly with the point cut off (not a bare leader), and go out and do it!
- TAKE CASTING LESSONS. Most fly shops offer lessons; some of the outdoor shows have casting seminars. Take advantage of the opportunities.
- GO OUT AND PRACTICE! Make sure you use a fly with the point cut off (not a bare leader), and go out and do it!
- GO OUT AND FISH - even if your casting is not where you think it should be. Sure, you'll miss some opportunities, but that'll just give you more incentive to practice. Stay tuned to BTB, as we will be running a series of articles talking about how to approach various fishing situations using fly gear.
- GET STARTED TYING FLIES - that was the other reason you started fly fishing, right? Plus you can save some money in the long run, if you don't go overboard. We will be running a "Getting Started" series on fly-tying in the near future as well.
- JOIN A CLUB - There aren't too many better ways to meet a good group of people who share similar interests. Clubs are filled with people who will be happy to help you improve your skillset. If you live in Southern California, check out our resource pages for a comprehensive list of clubs based in coastal areas.
- KEEP READING Beyond The Breakwater - We will continue to run these types of "Getting Started" articles, so keep an eye out. See you on the water!
