Celebrate Life Beyond The Breakwater!

Join us for a fun-filled day at the Long Beach Casting Club! On April 9, 2011, from 9:00a - 5:00p, we'll be hosting "Life Beyond The Breakwater" - a one day celebration. We want YOU to come out and learn more about coastal and offshore fly-fishing here in Souther California. Check out what's in store...

When I talk to people about "Beyond The Breakwater", whether it's at the launch ramp, in a tackle shop, or in an airport waiting for a flight, I often get one of three responses:

  • From non-fishermen:

"I didn't know you could fly-fish in salt water"

(this assumes they saw "A River Runs Through It", otherwise a blank stare is more normal)

  • From conventional gear fishermen that own their own boat:

"I've always wanted to try it, but it looks hard. Don't I need to spend a lot of money to get started?"

  • From experienced fly-fishermen:

"I though all you catch offshore on flies in Southern California are sharks!"

So (ignoring the first response), it seems to me that there's a bit of an education gap. This event is ment to fill that gap. Here's what's going on:

"Life Beyond The Breakwater" is a one-day event scheduled for:

April 9, 2011, from 9:00 - 5:00p

at the Long Beach Casting Club

The LBCC is located at: 4901 E. 7th St., Long Beach (or click HERE for a map)

There are two tracks:

Outdoor session from last summer's
Offshore class in San Diego

  • Track 1: "Spring Training"

This is a 6 hour, hands on seminar designed to give conventional gear private boaters a fire hose intro to saltwater fly-fishing from their own boat.

It's similar to the class we offered last summer in San Diego, but it's longer and includes coastal stuff as well as offshore.

Like last year, a free introductory casting class is included, with an FFF-certified casting instructor.

There is a $40.00 fee for this class to cover the facilities, repro costs, refreshments, etc., and class size is limited.

Click on the "Track 1" link to find out more, or click HERE to register!

  • Track 2: "Grill the Guides"

I've arranged for some of the best local FLY-FISHING guides & shop personnel to participate in a "Town Hall" type forum to answer any questions you have about BTB fly fishing.

There are three sessions: Coastal & Islands, Sharks, and Offshore. I've got people representing both small boat charters, and sport boat shared charters, so you can ask about both experiences.

This track assumes you have some familiarity with fly-fishing (salt or fresh), but everyone is welcome to attend. It's FREE, so what have you got to lose? And it's still waaay before the Sierra trout opener.

Click on the "Track 2" link above to find out more.

Sea Level Fly-fishing Demo Day

There will also be a "Sea Level Fly-fishing" demo day in the LBCC casting pond:

  • Try out the Sea Level Fly-fishing demo outfits and their Stripping Bucket II.

  • Fill out and return a feedback survey, and you'll be entered into a drawing for the 9 weight Extreme Inshore demo rod!
Winner need not be present to win. So even if you don't have much time, make sure you reserve a few minutes for a cast or two before you go...

Drawings for a Temple Fork Outfitters BVK Rod and an Abel #4 Pliers/holster kit!!

On top of the seminars and demo day, everyone that attends either Track I or Track II will be entered into a drawing for a Temple Fork Outfitters BVK fly rod (9' 9wt) or an Abel #4 Pliers and Holster kit!!

The TFO BVK is their latest and greatest, designed by none other than Bernard Victor ("Lefty") Kreh, with some coaxing from Flip Pallot. It is a great rod, and perfect for coastal and light offshore fly-fishing.

The Abel #4 pliers are in a class by themselves - They’ll remove a hook, cut 250-pound braided wire or any size monofilament line made. These pliers are a necessity when rigging saltwater leaders and are designed for this task. With built-in bottle opener!

Winners need not be present to win! But you do have to attend Track I, or at least one of the Track II seminars (Track I attendees get THREE tickets, Track II attendees get one ticket per session).

So there you have it...a fun-filled day of learning, with resources you can't get easily anywhere else!

See you there!
